Joven Enamorado
In light of last week's theme, I painted a young man who is playing the guitar thinking of his sweetheart by a fountain, which is very customary since the the elaborate fountains of Mexico are often associated as a hang out place for young people or just a calm place to relax on a hot day. Even though this isn't someone I know personally, this is related to the people I often saw leaning against fountains in el pueblo singing to themselves or serenading a young woman.
It's interesting that "Courtly love," in the medieval era was associated with nobility, with their distinct social ethos. It has long since become a form of uniting two loving people even in the most humblest places like el pueblo where my parents grew up. Yolanda Moreno makes a good point in "La inmortal trova yucateca" que en la actualidad, es posible comprobar la brusca desaparicion de todas aquellas tradiciones aun vivas durante la epoca de Foster (76). Although not to the innocence and extent of my grandparents time, serenatas and courting is still alive in Mexico, just very much changed and sincerely practiced by less people.
When Yolanda writes about La ciudad de Merida, "bella como la imagen del recuerdo, patria de la cancion nostalgica y dulce", sitio privilegiado donde las canciones se producian como las flares y los frutos" (79) still resonates for me in Mariachi music and Latin American music which is so filled with spirit and comes directly from the heart. Modern artists are more dramatic, commercialized, and sing about mainstream heartbreak topics that have no poetic sync, and all sound like they are high, drunk, or under major depression, but Marc Anthony's music tends to be pretty good, and with more meaning in the lyrics. You can never go wrong with traditional mariachi music which is so filled with beautiful lyrics and romantic melodies that bring people to tears. One of my mom's personal favorites is Gema, which is densely beautiful in it's lyrics and in the spirit of the romantic serenading spirit of the trovadores.
