Cuatro Milpas / El Desterrado

This song and theme completely hit home with  me because this song basically describes how my grandfather felt when the farm where he worked was taken away from his employer (“Cuatro milpas tan sólo han quedado, Del ranchito que era mío, ay!”). The song captures the overwhelming  doom feeling that comes with losing the land that provides a farmer's livelihood (las cosechas quedaron perdidas. Toditito se acabó). Also the documentary highlighted everything my grandfather ever believed in—the sacredness of the land and the value of farming as it is nourishment for the body. Many poor people in Mexico depend on solely farming and cultivation in order to survive:

Padre Dios, Aquí te traigo este maíz. Bendicelo
porque este maíz lo voy a sembrar. Multiplicalo
para que abunde mi cosecha porque soy pobre
con mi familia. Dame para vivir Senor. Te ofrezco
mis fuerzas, mi herramienta de trabajo, Amen.

This is why there is such a deep connection with faith and farm workers, because they know that God will multiply the fruits of their labor. Even when things go bad, like losing the ranch, poor farmers have faith that thins will turn out better. For people living in poverty, religious faith gives them strength. When the leaders, people higher up in the social ladder who think they're  too good for God—politicians, policy makers, theorists, academics, and many employers fail them, the only source of hope is God and the desire to bring one's family forward, and He does provide even in unexpected ways.

As for Octavio Paz, I read through "De la Independencia a la Revolución" and was looking forward on reading Paz's analysis on el massacre de Tlatelolco, but I didn't find it. Isn't it supposed to be in this chapter?

The one part I agreed with Paz was when he arguedthat "hay que transformar nuestros países en sociedades realmente modernas y no en meras fachadas para demagogos y turistas. En esta lucha nuestros pueblos no sólo se enfrentan a la vieja herencia española (la Iglesia, el ejército y la oligarquía)," sino al Dictador, al Jefe con la boca henchida de fórmulas legales y patrióticas, ahora aliado a un poder muy distinto al viejo imperialismo hispano: los grandes intereses del capitalismo extranjero (51). 

Mexico has been very romanticized in it's facade given to tourists in Acapulco and in many other toursity parts of Mexico. Mexico still suffers from alot of injustice and while not to the level seen in the U.S., soical isolation still affects indegenous communites. The government chooses to ignore the most poverty strivken areas which has been seen in History. This why students protested against the Olympics coming to Mexico in the 60s which amounted to the masacre of the students. 

However, what Paz does not understand it that the Catholic Church is what gives the poor hope, and more than doctrine, it's just the spirituality and confidence in God that keeps our people going. 

Igual como la romanticismo de los trovadores fue adoptado por los pueblos mexicanos, le iglesia Católica, aunque fue estabilizada durante lo conquista, la Fe Católica a tomado otra espíritu en México y la gente de México que sido mesclada con tradiciones indígenas.  Además muchos entienden que los conquistadores actuaron en formas inhumanas contra los valores Cristianos que están enfocados en el amor, paz, y justicia no en la violencia. Especialmente los pobres han adoptado la Fe Católica a estilo Mexicano. También tenemos nuestra madre morenita quien dejo su imagen en México para nosotros. Lo cual no ha pasado en ningún otro parte del mundo. Todos los otros imágenes de la Virgen como en Europa fueron hechos por humanos. Pero La imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe, ella misma la dejo en la tilma de Juan Diego. Exámenes científicos han sido hechos en la imagen y entre ellos el Profesor Jody Brant Smith, de la Universidad de Miami, afirmo que el material que origina los colores no es ninguno de los elementos conocidos en la tierra. En 1979 el estadounidense Philip Callahan estudio la imagen con rayos infrarrojos y descubrió con sorpresa que no había huella de pintura y que el tejido no había sido tratado con ningún tipo de técnica. Todos los artistas saben que para que un pintura se conserva tiene que ser tratado con prima, y la tilma no tiene ningún prima sin embargo se ha conservado atraves de los siglos. Los científicos han preguntaro seguidamente "¿Cómo es posible explicar esta imagen y su consistencia en el tiempo sin colores y con un tejido que no ha sido tratado? Es más, ¿cómo es posible que, a pesar de que no haya pintura, los colores mantengan su luminosidad y brillantez?" (La tilma de Juan Diego, Smith)

Asi, ningun academico de clase privilegiada como Octavio Paz, va poder apagar la fuerza de la fe en los mas marginalizados y los que mas sufren por las injusticias de governantes.
